This might sound like an exaggeration to some of you, but it's the truth. I've just spent the last 45 minutes trying to decide which were the three collections I liked best from New York Fashion Week. It was that hard, trust me, because I've been literally overwhelmed by the collections showcased in NYFW last week. Yet, I've managed to make my decision and before I change my mind again, I decided to share it with you.
Rodarte
The Mulleavy sisters have indeed outdone themselves this year. Their highly experimental collection paid tribute to the amazing painter Van Gogh. As an appreciator of Modern Art and Van Gogh in particular, I was naturally drawn to the motifs employed in this collection. The main motif of the collection, the sunflower print, was also one of Van Gogh's most explored subjects for his paintings. I personally fascinate myself with the way Van Gogh manages to create different paintings whilst exploiting the same motif over and over again. In the same way, Rodarte has used the sunflower motif extensively, yet managing to create truly identifiable, unique and singular pieces. Apart from the Van Gogh influence on this collection, I also enjoyed the unconventional cuts and structures of particular items. The colours of this collection, mostly pastels, fit in well with its principal influence. I wish I could congratulate the Mulleavy siblings in person, really.
Michael Kors
Goodness gracious, this collection swept me - and a couple of my other fashion-obsessed buddies - off my feet. I swear, it's mind-blowing. I've raved about animal print countless times, I've probably annoyed the guts out of you speaking about how awesome it is. But, here I go again. ANIMAL PRINT! Michael Kors did animal print, a lot, a real lot. Michael Kors's collection was heavily inspired by the mysterious lands of Africa, therefore animal prints and warm hues were a must to illustrate this influence completely. I feel like I can't possibly describe how much I've loved this collection. If I could, I'd get my hands on each and every piece of the collection. I would if I only could!
Altuzarra
Argh, what a struggle it was to choose my third favourite. It was a close one between Altuzarra, Derek Lam and Proenza Schuler. Altuzarra won at the very end. Essentially, the three collections had plenty of similarities, especially in terms of harshness and structure, but Altuzarra was probably the 'strongest' collection during NYFW. Altuzarra's woman is strong and confident, probably more strong and confident then we'd expect to see in a Spring / Summer collection. That is why I like it so much. It stood apart from the rest for its originality. Altuzarra's image of the strong woman was also effectively created through the use of make-up, especially the inclusion of very defined brows. I also liked the way Altuzarra juxtaposed harsh elements, like structure, with softer aspects, like tropical prints. The woman who wears Altuzarra is strong enough to rule the world. I must own a piece from this collection as soon as possible.
I wonder who your three favourite NYFW designers were. Please let me know!
Also, before leaving, a small comment on my new layout. I decided to change to a more minimalistic do because it's slightly more 'me' than what I've had before. I hope you like it :)
