Milano, ti amo.

Dear Readers,

I have a little confession to make. I want to sleep, so bad. Yet, I refuse to lay my head on my pink and purple pillows below posting my daily entry. So here I am, writing my thoughts about Milan Fashion Week. Yay me!

Or should I say, yay Milan? I don't know whether you were impressed by Milan Fashion Week - please let me know! - but I know I thoroughly did, especially after being so disappointed with London Fashion Week. Milano excited me so much, that I cannot choose just three collections as my favourites. I liked most of the collections exhibited at MFW, and it took me a lot of effort to control my enthusiasm and to stop tweeting and reblogging about everything going on at Milan.

There's one thing I'm really sure about tonight: I'm going shopping for metallics tomorrow. New York Fashion Week was very metallic, and the same gold and silver hues secured a landslide victory in London. Milan was no exception. It was as shiny as a polished disco ball. This, my readers, makes me worry, a lot. I don't have any metallics in my wardrobe and this is a matter I must attend to as soon as possible.

Just Cavalli's Metallic Pants

Without doubt, the numerous interpretations of the metallic trend were one of Milan's dominant and most exciting characteristics. From Just Cavalli to Sport Max, each designer explored the popular trend whilst giving it a distinct, personal flavour. Roberto Cavalli's metallics were very glamourous but Blumarine's were highly exotic. As I watched Sport Max's metallic pieces, particularly the metallic sweaters, I immediately thought of a couple of Zara sweaters I saw recently. Oh, and H&M have them too because I've seen them on a couple of blogs already. Words fail to explain how much I want these tops. But since there isn't H&M in Malta, I'm going to have to imagine myself wearing them. This should be read as 'H&M PLEASE COME TO MALTA!'. Boo!

Italy is a Mediterranean country - wow, how intelligent of me! - and its fashion truly embraces Mediterranean roots and characteristics. This year's MFW was as Mediterranean as a good plate of Spaghetti Aglio e Olio or a crunchy Bruschetta. It was as loud as Mediterranean people, both in terms of colours and in terms of prints and patterns. Colours ranged from bright greens to neon pinks! And patterns, what should I say about patterns? They were all over the place. D&G's silk prints were like hot butter on toast - I bet they were less greasy though - and I fell in love, deeply in love to be precise. Where prints are concerned, there was something for everyone, even for the fussiest fashionista. If you don't like paisley, there were florals. If you're not into animal print, then I'm sure you liked the striped garments. What did I like best? Well, Prada's seashells and Dolce and Gabbana's chilli peppers of course!

I really embrace the notion that Italian fashion is so popular because it accentuates the female figure. It hugs curves - although these models have no idea what curves are, but anyway! - and it's thus highly feminine. In fact, I didn't see a lot of androgyny going on during Milan Fashion Week, especially considering it was so popular both in New York and in London. Oh well! However, there was one truly androgynous collection: the one by Gucci. I don't consider myself to be one of Gucci's most religious followers. To be frank, I never really liked Gucci at all. But, having said that, I loved their S/S collection at MFW this year simply because it was so sharp, so structured and so full of tailored pieces. Frida Gannini, the brains behind this collection, might just have gained a new follower. Moi!

Love Gucci's trousers. I want them.

The Mediterranean atmosphere was further celebrated by Moschino and Missoni who both found their inspiration in Caliente Espana! It doesn't take a genius to spot the Spanish elements in both collections. Missoni's dresses reminded me of traditional flamenco dresses, with all the ruffles and all. And OMG, Moschino's collection is a godsend. Not only were the prints as loud as my neighbours, there were Matador hats! How cool is that? To add more Spanish flair to the collection, Moschino relied on typical items of clothing including capes and peasant dresses amongst others.

Milan did step out of the 'Mediterranean comfort zone' though. Blumarine and Ferragamo took us to the tropics instead! Blumarine's collection was as tropical and exotic as can be, with bright neon colours and grass skirts. Whilst I did enjoy the first few pieces of this collection, I found that by the end it went slightly overboard. It was a little bit too much. Okay, that is an understatement. It was way too much, too enthusiastic about the tropics. Chill Bluemarine, chill! Ferragamo also did a very tropic inspired collection, but it was more muted, especially when compared to the flamboyant collection by Blumarine.

Argh, I hate being predictable, but I always end up leaving my favourite collection for my entry's conclusion. I don't know why I do it, maybe because I don't want it to overshadow the rest. Anyway, here comes my favourite from Milan Fashion Week. Ladies and gents, it's Fendi. You might not be surprised knowing my eternal allegiance to Karl Lagerfeld, who was *surprise surprise* behind this collection. I spent the past days in torment, thinking that I should have been at that show. But then again, on second thoughts, I realised that it was a good thing after all. I would have sat there with my mouth open the entire time, drooling and acting like a woman in love. Sounds embarrassing as I write about it, let alone actually being there. The vertical stripes, the cut-out shoulders, the gold buttons, the colours, the pleats, this collection has me written all over it! I don't know whether you get the same impression, but this collection seems like Chanel's playful sibling to me. Instead of choosing two pictures from the collection and posting them here, I'm going to post the entire Fendi show for you to enjoy. It would be unfair to pick only two pieces. Oh, and in this way you can enjoy the music played during the show, which fit the collection like a glove. RAISE THE ROOF FOR FENDI EVERYONE!

Milan was the best fashion week up to now. Let's see whether Paris will steal the limelight!
