Style Icon: Rihanna

Dear Readers,

I have a very difficult relationship with Rihanna. I loved her in her early days, I danced my ass off to her tunes every Saturday night. Then came the very much despised 'Russian Roulette' phase, when nearly every female on the planet contemplated getting the signature Rihanna pixie cut. That phase, I just couldn't make myself appreciate it. When I thought Rihanna was spiralling down to an abyss of forgetfulness, she dyed her hair red, and boy did I hate it at first. Then it grew on me and I fell in love with her new style and looks.

The same thing happens to me with her music. I spend the first few listens of a song trying to find out why people are so all over the particular track, I decide I don't like it only to end up thinking it's the catchiest tune in the world after a while. The situation is rather embarrassing.

Musical tastes aside, no one can deny that Rihanna is bringing many trends back. She's not up there with Madonna, Gaga or Robyn in terms of 'reinventing trends', but she has sported some pretty inspirational looks lately. Even though Rihanna's versatility does not even dream to match that of the ladies I've just mentioned, I still find it difficult to pin down her style and describe it. She changes it up all the time. So, instead, I chose three pieces that I personally associate with this singer. As I like say to my friends, these items have 'Rihanna written all over them'.

1. The Vintage Denim Jacket

Rihanna's Vintage Jacket in 'We Found Love'

Let's face it guys, Rihanna brought this jacket back. I can list at least 25 people who hated this 80s inspired piece and are now lusting after it like mad. The oversized, vintage denim jacket is a staple in my wardrobe - even though I haven't worn it in ages - and I always recommend having one in your own closet too. These jackets come in all colours and sizes, but my favourite is the light, distressed kind. Many 'trendy' stores have these jackets every year, but a trip to your local charity shop might grab you an authentic Levi's jacket at a ridiculously cheap price!

2. Vertical Stripes

Rihanna's look in 'What's my name?'

Correction: vertical stripes, in black and white. I confess guys, I can't see vertical stripes without thinking about Rihanna. If I'm  not mistaken, she has worn them in her latest video for her hit single 'We Found Love' as well. Whilst I am personally looking for a pair of vertically striped jeans, I would also appreciate owning a similar blazer to the one above. These type of stripes elongate the body, and just like 'The Miracle Dress', they'll make you look slimmer in no time.

3. Crop Tops

Rawr, really.

And here comes the million dollar question, 'Are crop tops hot or not?'. I say, somewhere in between. They can be incredibly tacky if not worn well. Unless you want to look like a mindless young woman, wear something high-waisted - look at Rihanna, she does it so well! - to make up for the exposed flesh on the tummy area. Needless to say, make sure your tummy is well toned before even thinking about sporting a crop top!

Rihanna may have some difficulty remembering her name sometimes, but we don't have any problems to recall what she wore!
