Meet Marius Op't Eynde

I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to interview one of the much awaited international fashion designers from next Saturday's Runway Malta. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Marius Op't Eynde, a designer who describes his upcoming collection as 'high-speed cycling couture'.

Particularly intrigued by the employment of the term 'cycling' with reference to a fashion collection, I asked what inspired this particular collection. In Op't Eynde's own terms, this collection is inspired by the 'clash between cycling wear from the 1950s' and modern high-tech cycling attire. 

I was struck by the way Marius described creating the prints in his own collection from scratch, with some of the prints mirroring the blur effect of a sports photograph. How cool is that? 'Very cool' is the answer to that question. 

We are to expect an interesting mix of old and new, a juxtaposition of traditional twill-weave fabrics and high-tech materials and a particular 'long print blazer', which Op't Eynde identifies as his personal favourite from the collection.

I also asked Marius about street style and whether he believes it can influence runway shows. His reply was affirmative, he believes both worlds influence each other, but the sort of street style we admire on blogs like The Sartioralist tends to be indirectly dictated by what is exhibited on the catwalk.

Marius Op't Eynde told me that if he weren't doing fashion, he would probably be working in another creative field like architecture or design. On my part, I'm glad he chose this path, especially since he declared that his collection is easy to adapt to personal style (even though some of the pieces require some confidence to sport!)
