I think I've said that 'if I were to be reincarnated into a shoe, I'd be a brogue' so many times that I'm one front-running contender for the International Prize for Repetition 2012. Given my tendency to include brogues in every other post, I'm frequently asked about how I style what I consider to be the 'shoe of the gods'.Everything. I wear brogues with everything. You name it, I brogue it. I could live on a pair of brown brogues and another pair of black ones. True story. For this post's sake though, I decided to share with you three of my favourite brogue combinations whilst hopefully outlining their versatility.
Like a Boy
Well-known fact coming your way: brogues are essentially male shoes. It takes no genius to figure out that brogues are an obvious choice when sporting a quintessential masculine look like the one below. Tailored blazer, high-waisted jeans and a polka dot shirt (because I don't wear them enough do I?) have 'hey you, add a good pair of brown brogues to the party' written all over them. I personally also like to roll up the jeans' once in order for them to just graze the ankle. If you have a pair of particularly pretty brogues, this rolling up will accentuate them a bit more.
Dress it Up
I remember being reluctant to pair brogues with dresses for the longest time ever. I was a fool wasn't I? Whereas most of the people I know (and their dogs and budgies) love adding their favourite pair of flats to a pretty dress, I'm more into the brogues and dress combination. You know I'm a wild one right? The thing with brogues is that they make the overall outfit look much more dressed up and put together. It's like you give the impression that you've spent AGES figuring out what to wear in the morning (when, in reality, you just grabbed the first three things you could unearth from your closet at 6am)
Just Chillin'
Only this morning I met a reader who told me how busy she is with all the studying she has to catch up with in time for her January exams. Yeah, been there done that. There's nothing like an afternoon at the library, pondering about Shakespeare or new marketing strategies as you dream of getting that coveted A on your report. Library afternoon outfits need to be comfortable, and shoes tend to make or break how effortless and comfortable a look winds up to be. I'm head over heels with these knicker shorts at the moment. I think they look perfect with a big jumper (the kind that you can drown in when you stare at the cursor and realise that your assignment is simply not going to write itself...) and a messy bun. I'm also quite a fan of hosiery layering. In this set, for instance, I added some knee length socks to a pair of spotty tights. Not only do they keep you warmer, but we all know that layering is the new black.
