My closet-ful of white shirts always greet a new sequin piece with a raised eyebrow. 'Is she for real,' they seem to utter, 'how on earth does Little Miss Sequin relate to us?'
True. Sequins are anything but minimal, but in rare cases I might even decide to go all glitzy in a sequin dress. I am, admittedly, very picky with sequins. Firstly they have to be sewn in nicely - I like to avoid dropping sequins on my path in a very 'Hansel and Gretel' fashion - and they shouldn't be too iridescent either. As a rule of thumb, I make sure they get the limelight, and the rest just sits there quietly without making too much of a statement.
1. Coloured Sequins
The first dress I came across on Boohoo.com is the gorgeous Milly Sequin Tie Back Prom Dress. Crafted in well-made coloured sequins, the dress allows for quite some experimentation in the choice of bag and shoes. The dress may have a strong silver backdrop - evident, right? - but it also has a million coloured sequins that can be used as inspiration for the rest of the outfit. The tights I chose are not too opaque and I went for a pair of purple pumps and a textured purple clutch. You could also say for blue, red or pink, but I feel like purple added just the right dose of colour without going too bright and way overboard! Check out the dress by clicking here.
2. Block Coloured Sequins
Dresses like the Olivia Zip Back Long Sleeve Dress from Boohoo.com (which also comes in a plum colour, as seen here!) are the easiest sequin dresses to style. Given that the silhouette is relatively simple and the dress comes in one block of colour, only an idiot would get it wrong! You can obviously go for an all black and red lip combination, but you can add a pop of metallic detail with toe-cap shoes, plain gold studs and a YSL gold clutch which we naturally all afford...
3. Metallic Sequins
Say hello to the show-stopper! I shared a picture of a similar dress on my Facebook page yesterday and everyone seemed to be head over heels with the idea of a metallic sequin dress. I therefore decided to find something similar and the closest I got was this dress! This is the Patsy Sequin Cowl Neck Dress from Boohoo.com. This dress is clearly all over the place, so keeping the rest basic isn't only optional but pretty much mandatory. You could go for more opaque tights than the ones I chose, but I like how these sheer ones look with the entire outfit. I'd also try and make the most out of my favourite highlighting powders to complement the outfit, but let's do ourselves a favour and use a light hand with that. Oscar statuette look-a-like is such a no no! Here's the link to the dress if you need it.
