Black Knit + Printed Pants + Flats

I was casually looking through my Vintage Pinterest board - which you can access here - and I spotted this stunning picture of Brigitte Bardot wearing a pair of very ditsy pants layered over a black knit and paired with black flats. Even though printed trousers can be slightly 'out there' in terms of subtlety - or rather, the lack of it - Brigitte's combination is quite a watered down version which is, as well, incredibly wearable.

As Spring starts approaching, I inevitably start looking for printed trousers to layer over my million and one white shirts. Yet, inspired by Brigitte's ingenious alternative, I have to admit that I'm on the lookout for a nice black knit to wear over some of my favourite printed lower garments. Change is good.

COMBINATION ONE

I tried to recreate Brigitte's look as closely as I could in the outfit set above. Needless to say, the black jumper and printed trousers combination works as well with heels as it does with flats, but I think the latter give it a more laid-back feel, toning down the 'loud' pants even more. I also think it's better to choose a pair of trousers that creates contrast with the darkness of the jumper, bag and shoes. Oh, and why not? Some red lipstick to match the pants' design.

COMBINATION TWO

This second set is still inspired from Brigitte's picture, yet it has a more playful French feel to it. Instead of opting for plain black flats, I went for my preferred type of shoe: the brogue. These Jil Sander pants have some black detailing on them which matches perfectly with the rest of the outfit, hence why I went as far as adding a typical French black beret. Wild moi.

I'lm off to Oxford Street in a couple of hours and getting myself a black jumper is one of my aims. Wish me luck!
