Valentino Fall 2013 RTW

Given that my tastes weren't exactly too excited with what Karl Lagerfeld conjured up for the Chanel Fall 2013 RTW collection, I had a look at what the others had to offer to choose my favourite from the Paris bunch at PFW. It was a matter of seconds until I quickly chose maison Valentino and the outstandingly exceptional Vermeer-inspired series of garments designed by the ever-so-talented Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli.

'Girl with a Pearl Earring' is a painting by Dutch artist Vermeer which uses a single pearl as the focal point of the work of art. This painting is so popular that it's also known as the 'Mona Lisa of the North'. Fancy, right?

The reason why I'm making reference to this particular painting is that it was, according to the designers themselves, one of the main elements on their collection's moodboard. In addition to the aesthetic of this highly praised painting, the Valentino duo drew inspiration from the label's enviable archives to create a collection that was as austere as it was attractive. With its intricate details and embroidery, the collection didn't fail to capture that coveted sense of calmness and serenity.

The evident use of collars is hard to miss. Laser-cut, leather encrusted and sometimes including beads, these white collars emphasise the face's structure without making too much of a statement. They frame the face to perfection!

Have I ever told I find myself drawn to monastic and convent-like garments? Now you know. Hence why my words for this collection are only ones of praise. I can totally understand why Chiuri and Piccioli described their work as one that seeks to evoke the sentiment of 'private sensuality'.

And if I needed anything else to make me want my hair to grow long (at the speed of light possibly!), all I need to picture in front of me are the gorgeous hairdos at the Valentino show. How can I not love the little black headbands and those over-the-shoulder braids?

Austerity, my dears, is the way to go.
