For the second time this week, bloggers, fashion lovers and the general public headed to the Sacra Infermeria at the MCC in Valletta for yet another fashion spectacle. This time, however, we were also joined by a host of Russian members of the media and the fashion industry. The final show of Malta Fashion Week - excluding the awards obviously - was a celebration of Maltese and Russian fashion, with designers hailing from both countries showcasing a series of seven collections.
Winner of the sixth cycle of BNTM and established topmodel Tiffany Pisani took the opportunity to launch her brand new swimwear line at the same event. Her collection, which opened the night's event, featured a great variety of pieces, including traditional triangle style bikinis, bandeaus as well as one-piece swimwear. In terms of colour, the collection relied on brights like pink and turquoise, yet it did not shy away from neutrals like white and black. I appreciated the detail, especially the ones on the briefs. The diversity of silhouettes utilised also ensures that there's a number for every body type.
As soon as the event's host described Russian designer Alexandra Serova's as 'provocative', I was curious to find out what kind of 'provocative' this collection would turn out to be. In the end, it was evident that the designer opted for full-on femininity through the extensive use of sequins, lace, sheer fabric and plunging necklines. As a sucker for exposed backs, I immediately identified that as one of my favourite aspects of this collection. Whereas I spotted quite a few black and red numbers, a single pink item - a gorgeous floor length pink lace dress - was the strongest piece of the collection. I'm not a fan of pink attire, but I'd gladly make an exception for that frock!
John Callus Exclusive Leather Designs was the third designer on show on the night. After such a feminine collection, the Joe Callus designs proved to be significantly harsher. There was also a pair of Jeffrey Campbell Spiked Litas on the runway - which undoubtedly got us all excited! - that only served to toughen up the collection even further.
Vassil Petrilski was all about panel work, fabric blocking and motifs. All aforementioned factors could be seen in all the pieces of this prolific collection. Numbers, for both men and women, included a heavy use of denim and warm, earthy hues. Definitely not a collection that can be easily forgotten, Vassil Petrilski's collection made us wonder whether we should bring out our Spice Girls era tartan skirts back. Well, there was a little Spice Girls panel on one of the pieces too...is that a sign?
In my humble opinion, the final two collections, by Sergey Pugachev and Pippa Toledo, were the best of the entire night. The first, a bridal collection inspired by the ever so beautiful Greece, was an instant hit with the crowd. As bridal gown after bridal gown went out on the catwalk, you could almost feel every lady in the audience trying to imagine herself in one of those gorgeous dresses. The silhouettes were evidently Grecian-inspired, with one-shoulder necklines and tunic style dresses paired with flat sandals, but there was also a strikingly futuristic-looking dress with a halter neckline and a lifted collar which stood in contrast to the rest. The skirts went from simple draped ones to a full-blown skirt for the final piece, and the bodices - the star aspect of the collection, if you ask me - were like a cradle for elaborate detail, including marvelous designs hand painted with oil-based colours.
It was truly a case of 'leaving the best for last', since Pippa Toledo's mind-blowing collection was of a traffic-stopping nature! Whereas the garments deserve an applause and a shout-out in their own right, I can't help but mention the accessories donned by the models during the show! Bags, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, it's incredibly hard to choose a favourite one (or two) for me to share with you. Even though each piece was very similar to the rest, there was still a slight difference in each and every one of them. I love how gold was the main metallic used for the jewellery, since I evidently tend to tilt towards that side of life. In spite of their statement-making quality, I still find these pieces incredibly wearable, especially during the warm Summer months!
