I returned home yesterday to a scandalously full email inbox and photos from the Ralph Lauren SS2013 collection. Mr. Lauren and I are usually on good terms, but following yesterday's collection, I decided to take our relationship to a new and improved level.
At first glance, this collection reminded me of the Moschino SS2012 show. So much so that I spent around 30 seconds asking myself, 'Ralph, why did you do this?' Then I came back to my senses and looked at the two carefully. In comparison, Lauren's collection is more vibrant, colourful, youthful and wearable. In spite of their evident similarity, both being inspired by passionate Latino countries, Moschino was definitely more dramatic, theatrical and masculine. It also came with that overly melodramatic melancholic sentiment you would easy sense in a typical Latino soap opera. Ralph Lauren's playful colours, accessories and details made his take on the Chica Latina fresher and more light-hearted.
The latino influences slowly gave way to a series of Great Gatsby-ish silhouettes, including a stunning white suit so sharp it could slice a diamond in milliseconds. Following the wave of colour during the first part of the collection, the ending, excluding bright bursts of red, followed a more monochrome path.
